Where to eat in Marmaris
Monday, 2nd November 2009
When it comes to food, visitors to Marmaris are really spoilt for choice. As well as the inevitable fast food establishments, there are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from serving Turkish, Indian, Chinese, Thai, French, and International and British food.
The kebab is very much the local dish of turkey, but not the kind you find in a greasy spoon in the UK. They will made of lamb, chicken, or fish, marinated with herbs and spices, and barbecued over hot charcoal. Served with salad, a spicy sauce and flat bread, and you have a simple but wonderful meal. The Doner Kebab, so loved in the UK, is very popular here as a lunchtime snack, but again the real thing, not the sad imitation on sale in the UK.
Compared to other cuisines, Turkish is uncomplicated, and full of fresh ingredients. Fresh vegetables are widely used, mainly aubergines, chick peas, beans and tomatoes, and a variety of sauces made with yoghurt.
For a pre-drink meal, try a Raki, made of anise. A favourite, but very powerful. For a desert with your meal, try Turkish Delight, not the rubbish sold in the UK, but the real thing. Local Turkish beer is called Efes and is of excellent quality. Meals end with Turkish coffee, very thick and strong, always served in a small cup.
Most restaurants are close to the beach and the promenade. Many of the better restaurants will also provide Turkish music and dancing, including the famous Belly Dancers.
